Milla Jovovich Talks ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ At Comic-Con 2012

Moderator Ralph Garman introduced the film as being “bigger and better” than any of the previous installments. He brought out Anderson to talk a bit before the other actors came on stage.

•Anderson said he wanted to make the first truly epic apocalyptic film, and had the aim to go bigger and better since he feels the series is winding down to a close.
•They tried to make the movie as big as possible in terms of scale and action, but they waned to make it as small as possible when it came to Milla’s character. Anderson said this lead to having some of the biggest scares because it’s Alice against everyone else.

They then played the latest theatrical trailer for the audience, but this was my first time seeing it in 3D. Lots of things were flying at the screen and popping out, so expect to have stuff in your face if you see it in 3D.

• The cast was introduced onstage and Milla excitedly yelled “WHAT’S UP!” as soon as she sat down.
• Milla said she didn’t’ appreciate what it meant to be a superhero until she played a normal person in the Resident Evil universe, and that terrified her.
• Li Bingbing said she had a great time making the movie and loved all the makeup.

Anderson then introduced a clip that’s from a climatic, 9-minute sequence from the end film. I won’t go into great detail so I don’t spoil a scene from the end of the movie, but it features a hand-to-hand fight scene between Jovovich and a few other characters. Lots of sharp objects were involved and the scene took place in the snow on top of what looked like a frozen lake or ocean. Honestly the fight scene actually looked pretty cool, but a grating rock song played over the entire sequence that was a tad annoying. It’s clear that Anderson took advantage of the 3D, as lots of things came flying towards the screen.

• Fehr and Rodriguez talked about how great it was to come back after having their characters die in previous films.
•Rodriguez said as soon as she found out Anderson was making other movies after the first one, she hounded him to come back because she’s a big fan of the video games.

Bingbing said that even though she doesn’t speak great English, Jovovich really helped her along throughout production.

• A guy in a Buzz Lightyear costume came up to the microphone and asked Rodriguez if she would have sex with him. Rodriguez responded by telling the guy he reminded her of someone she used to know that was “blasted off his mind” all the time. She found the guy standing in her backyard “doing something horrible to himself,” and she stared back at him holding a knife and a .45 that Samuel L. Jackson gave her on S.W.A.T.
• Rodriguez talked about Jovovich’s influence on having more female action heroes, and also singled out Anderson as a champion of fighting to get these action movies made with a female star.
•A young girl stepped up and told Rodriguez that she’s been an inspiration to her since Girlfight and asked, since she’s being resurrected in Resident Evil and Fast and Furious, if we could see more of Captain Trudy Chacon from Avatar. Rodriguez was truly touched by the girl’s comments, and answered that the Avatar question is something for James Cameron to answer.
•Anderson said that he feels like Retribution is the beginning of the end, adding that it has a lot of revelations in it and a lot of death.

4:40 – That’s all she wrote for “Resident Evil: Retribution,” a quick panel clocking in at just about 30 minutes.

4:38 – How is it returning to the franchise? Oded says, “It’s wonderful.” He adds, “If they asked me to be the lunch boy and deliver sandwiches I probably would have done that, too.”

4:36 – How much do you guys bench? Milla confuses “benching” with “planking,” but then says she doesn’t bench. Michelle says, “I gyrate a lot. It keeps me healthy.” Everyone laughs, but then she turns it around saying she was referring to dancing.

4:35 – Milla says she and Paul have had conversations about the end of Alice while at home. She says that he told her what will happen. “Paul did tell me an idea he had for a #6. I don’t know details and all that … but he said, I really want to bring it to a closure and if we did do another one,” he wants to end the story. Michelle taunts Milla saying she thought Milla was going to reveal something juicy.

4:33 – Paul talks about the future of the franchise, calling the movie “the beginning of the end.” He goes on, “A lot of characters die,” and “no one’s really safe at this point.”

4:32 – For Michelle, how does it feel to be the queen of resurrection with this and “Fast & Furious?” She replies, “I am very grateful, love, for your comment there.”

4:30 – What kind of training did you have to do? Milla says, “There’s certain things that I’ve learned doing action films … for over a decade now,” and that she’s always trying to test herself. “But I do have to say, screaming and being suburban Alice … I would have the biggest headache.”

4:28 – Another fan follows up the incident well, joking that was her question, too. She moves on to her real question about Milla and Michelle being strong leading ladies. “Milla was doing that shit way before I started,” Michelle says. She adds that she didn’t make a lot of money going the route she did, but she’s very grateful for her opportunities. Milla says, “There’s never been a better time to be a woman who wants to kick butt.”

4:27 – Buzz Lightyear steps up to the mic for the first fan question. He asks Michelle if she’d consider having sex with him. A big Comic Con no-no. The audience boos, but Michelle actually launches into a response. She tells a story of some drunk guy who used to do something nasty in her backyard. She tells the “sex question” guy that that’s who he reminds her of. He’s escorted out.

4:26 – Back to some questions. Mika talks about working with Milla with the help of a translator. Even though she couldn’t speak English on set, Milla welcomed her warmly and she had a great time making the movie.

4:20 – Paul says the scene is nine minutes long in the movie, but we only get two and some of the visual effects aren’t finished. Here’s a big time SPOILER ALERT for anyone who doesn’t want the grand finale spoiled. The scene takes place in an icy tundra. Alice pulls up in a gigantic snow truck – we get a glimpse of a child inside, probably her daughter from the trailer – but the truck tips and she gets out right in front of an Umbrella trailer structure. Out of that trailer comes Jill Valentin (Sienna Guillory), Mika’s character and Rain. Alice and Jill go at it in an often slo-mo fight sequence while Rain injects herself with some sort of serum that has this scorpion-like creature in it. Apparently it makes her indestructible because she easily takes on a barrage of bullets. Also of note, the 3D here pops more so than in a 3D video shown in Hall H today thanks to snowfall.

4:19 – And now here comes the SDCC exclusive footage! Paul says, “This is a small taste of the climatic fight at the end of the movie.”

4:17 – Milla says she’s thrilled to be back as Alice. “Just watching the trailer with my glasses, the movie is so spectacular, you’re gonna love it!” Of exploring a new side of Alice, Milla says it was “horrifying.” She says she took super powered Alice for granted and that all normal people do is “run and scream.”

4:16 – The cast joins Paul on stage – Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Oded Fehr, Boris Kodjoe and Mika Nakashima.

4:13 – Here comes the trailer – nothing new. Same one that’s already online. Again, it’s tough to feel the depth of the 3D so far away from the screen.

4:11 – First up is Paul W.S. Anderson. He takes the stage to chat a bit before revealing some never before seen footage. “This movie really goes above and beyond any of the ‘Resident Evil’ movies so far.” He says it was important to make the film big as far as scale goes, but small as well to keep the focus on Milla’s character.

4:10 – Here comes the moderator, Ralph Garman. He calls film five the biggest of them all.

Round five of the “Resident Evil” franchise is due out on September 14th, so what better way to build hype than by having Alice herself grace Hall H? Not only is Milla Jovovich coming in for Screen Gems’ “Resident Evil: Retribution” panel, but Michelle Rodriguez, Oded Fehr, Boris Kodjoe, Mika Nakashima and writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson will be in the house as well. We’ve seen a fair amount of trailers, clips and posters, but supposedly the gang will have an exclusive preview of the new film to share.
