Written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, ‘Resident Evil: Retribution,’ the fifth installment in game-to-film franchise stars Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Sienna Guillory, Kevin Durand, Shawn Roberts, Colin Salmon, Johann Urb, Boris Kodjoe and Li Bingbing. The Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T-virus continues to ravage the Earth, transforming the global population into legions of the flesh eating Undead. The human race’s last and only hope, Alice (Milla Jovovich), awakens in the heart of Umbrella’s most clandestine operations facility and unveils more of her mysterious past as she delves further into the complex. Without a safe haven, Alice continues to hunt those responsible for the outbreak; a chase that takes her from Tokyo to New York, Washington, D.C. and Moscow, culminating in a mind-blowing revelation that will force her to rethink everything that she once thought to be true. Aided by newfound allies and familiar friends, Alice must fight to survive long enough to escape a hostile world on the brink of oblivion. The countdown has begun. ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ opens in 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D on September 14th in the US and September 28th in the UK.
With each chapter of this ‘Resident Evil’ saga Alice has evolved in some way. After playing her for a decade now, how is to come back for this movie, in seeing her go from a naïve amnesiac to a superhumanly gifted warrior and to now, a battered foot soldier? Also, you get to reunite with so many of your friends and foes from the previous films as well…..
Milla Jovovich: Doing this series has been such an adventure. It’s always amazing to come back to this incredible, fantastical, magical ‘Resident Evil’ world and to Alice. I know her so well now. I know how she will react, what she will and won’t do. She’s become a huge part of my life, and as I grow, she grows. I’m always excited to see where she’s going next. People really became invested in these characters. When Paul figured out how to bring everyone back, we all got really excited. There’s a lot of illusion versus reality in this movie and it will take people by surprise. It was amazing to have everyone back together again. That was awesome.
With Alice being stripped of her superpowers in‘Resident Evil: Afterlife,’ how was that going into this movie? Both mentally and physically she has to adjust….
Milla Jovovich: Yeah. As Alice becomes acclimated to being human again, she has to learn to trust and depend on those around her. We’ve moved closer to the original Alice, who was a little more vulnerable. When she’s in danger, the audience can be scared for her because she can’t just make everything explode. She’s still a badass, just not a superhero badass. Without her superpowers, she doesn’t feel as isolated. She feels more in touch with other people, and she has to be much more of a team player. She’s really accepting people into her life, she’s a human again. There’s a little bit of humour to her, she has been able to acquire bit of a sense of humour about it all (laughs). If all you do is go around killing zombies and being chased by Umbrella storm troopers, you may as well take it with a wink and a smile. She smiles more, she has a little bit of fun to it. As this point it’s the end of the world, so if you’re not gonna have a good time, what’s the point (laughs).
Considering her becoming more human, I suspect you have to work a lot more?
Milla Jovovich: Definitely, you can’t just stand there and have your pupils dilate with special effects and make everything explode – you have to actually work (laughs)! So with that there’s a lot more stunt sequences, a lot more fight sequences. And it’s still bigger than life. But it’s more about the fact that now we know she can die. It was a big challenge for me to play a sort of normal person in a ‘Resident Movie.’ She’s not the fighter, she’s just a normal person, in this catastrophic, horrific situation. It is much easier to be the strong female with the big gun who shoots something. You’re cool, you can just do a flip and be out of there (laughs).
With working on ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ being your biggest physical undertaking to date, how did you find all the physicality of the role? And then filming in 3-D with those scenes, I can imagine that adds another layer to it?
Milla Jovovich: Oh yeah! With each ‘Resident Evil’ film, we’ve raised the bar. I don’t want to keep repeating myself and neither does Paul. Our audience doesn’t want to go see the same movie over and over again. These are definitely some of the most challenging fight sequences I’ve ever done in any movie. And filming in 3-D with stunts. 3-D is definitely a challenge, not only for the actors but for the stunt people as well. I’ve been trained to punch and miss so that it sells to camera, but with 3-D, you almost have to make contact to sell a fight. It takes it into dangerous territory and makes it quite exhilarating. That was interesting.
Without giving too much away, we get learn a lot more about the Umbrella Corporation in ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’?
Milla Jovovich: This movie is culminating to this big reveal of what the Umbrella Corporation really is and how big it actually is. It’s really….when Paul called it “The Hive”, it really is like this army of ants. You crush a few and a million more come straight after. When you see the scope of what they’re doing and what they have been doing, it’s mind blowing to think that they can take a project on as big – and no wonder the world is coming to an end. Because it’s disastrous what’s going on. This is where Alice’s world gets completely turned upside down, in so many crazy ways that even she doesn’t understand. By the time she’s aware of it, it’s just overwhelming, what the Umbrella Corporation can do and what they’ve become.
