Synopsis

Set in the 17th century, [The Three Musketeers] recounts the adventures of a young man named d’Artagnan after he leaves home to become a guard of the musketeers. D’Artagnan is not one of the musketeers of the title; those are his friends Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, inseparable friends who live by the motto “all for one, one for all”. (Credit: Wikipedia)

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Milla Jovovich has been cast in this 3D adaptation of the classic Alexandre Dumas’ novel as Milady de Winter. The Three Musketeers will mark Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla’s third onscreen collaboration as director and star respectively. Filming is expected to begin late August 2010 at the Studio Babelsberg in Germany as part of an altogether tight production schedule. The Three Musketeers is currently slated for an April 15 2010 U.S. theatrical release.

Filming

Filming began on 26 August 2010 and completed on 9 October in the same year. It was filmed with an Arri Alexa camera. A sizeable proportion of the funding for the film came from German sources: $4 million from Bavaria’s bank fund (BBF) and film and TV fund (FFF), about $1.3 million from the German Federal Film Board, about $10 million in tax rebate cash from the German film fund, the DFF and $1 million (€800,000) in subsidy financing from the Berlin-Brandenburg Medienboard. The production budget was between $75 million and $90 million.

Reception

The film received negative reviews from critics, being mainly focused on the lack of originality and visual effects. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports that 25% of 86 critics have given the film a positive review, with a rating average of 4 out of 10. The website’s consensus is:

“It plays admirably fast and loose with Alexandre Dumas’ classic tale, but in every other respect, The Three Musketeers offers nothing to recommend—or to set it apart from the many other film adaptations”.

Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average score out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, gives the film a score of 35 based on 15 reviews. CinemaScore polls reported that the average grade moviegoers gave the film was a “B” on an A+ to F scale.

The Three Musketeers (2011) Blu-ray review

Paul W.S. Anderson brings his “Resident Evil” experience — and star — to a modern, steampunk retelling of Alexandre Dumas’ “The Three Musketeers,” and while the results are uneven, the film does have its moments of joy. Anderson’s never going to be a critical favorite, and this is true even for his foray into a … Continue readingThe Three Musketeers (2011) Blu-ray review
