Synopsis

After a tipping point catastrophe, Earth is void of plants and global oxygen levels have dropped to 5%. Instead of communicating properly and working together, the survivors create artificial conflict and fight for an “oxygen generator”, killing each other and destroying the machine. The survivors move on to the next place with an oxygen generator.

– Released to very little marketing, fanfare, and less critical acclaim on April 26, 2024, Breathe is a sci-fi thriller getting a new chance to win streaming audiences on Paramount+. The critically panned movie starring Milla Jovovich and Jennifer Hudson failed to resonate among the masses, garnering atrocious reviews and a lowly $239,000 worldwide following its limited theatrical and VOD release
– Yet, despite the negative reception, Breathe is up over 1,000 spots on the streaming charts (via Just Watch), indicating its newfound popularity on the streaming platform. One of the positive aspects of modern-day movie exhibition trends is, that even if a film does not land as intended during its initial theatrical run, streaming services can increase the viewership and, in some cases, change hearts and minds regarding public perception. Although Breathe may be nominated for several Razzies by year’s end, at least it’s drumming up more business than it did during its initial release.
– In December 2019, Doug Simon’s screenplay Breathe was revealed to be on that year’s “Black List” of the most-liked unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. In May 2022, it was announced that Sam Worthington, Jennifer Hudson, Milla Jovovich, Quvenzhané Wallis and Common were set to star in the film, to be directed by Stefon Bristol.
